Embarrassment 101

Phew. Wiping my brow, breathing a sigh of relief, and indulging in a cookie (or five) after finally finishing my two-week long lifeguarding class! I passed the written and the practical no more than an hour ago, meaning that my $200 investment in the training, and ample summer job opportunities, will not be going to waste. So, hooray! In the future, if you ever find yourself in some deep water (yes, literally), or ingesting/inhaling poison, or maybe even in emergency childbirth...I'm your girl. Just no severed body parts, avulsions, or lacerations. Did I mention I just ate my age in cookies?

Anyways, I'm proud of myself for finishing. I'm not a swimmer. Oh, believe me though, before last Friday night's pre-course test, I was totally a believer in my aquatic gifts. I mean, I've lived on a lake for 5+ years...I've played sports my whole life...I have instincts. "Yes, yes, you're a swimmer," I encouraged myself.

Turns out, floating around the lake all summer on surf boards...paddling around in a tippy canoe...maybe diving in once in a while to cool off between tans...doesn't count as swimming. My Washington brain will never understand these California fish. They take their lifeguarding EXTREMELY seriously down here. For good reason though, as most is done out on the open ocean. So, not only was I the only one in my class going for an out-of-state lifeguarding position, but I was also the only one who doesn't "swim" daily. And when I say "swim" this time, I really mean water polo state champions, Cal-Poly bound scholarship swimmers, and your average EMT professionals. (These, too, must renew their lifeguarding certificates annually). And then there's me...in my Costco bathing suit--no swim cap, no goggles. Needless to say, I'm thankful for their knowledge in the great absence of my own, as they encouraged me and guided me through the course.

Soooo, I'm not quite as cool as I sound. And as I swam/drowned my away across the lanes that Friday night, gasping/praying things only the Holy Spirit could comprehend, I realized that this was going to take a lot of work. I had signed up to be a Lifeguard, and that was the training I was going to receive. To wear the label, I had to first bear the weight.

Although this was a rather minor progress on the bigger scale, it still pushes me forward. I want to continue to face those things in my life that make me feel the most fearful and inadequate; I want to stare them down, successfully, knowing that they can't belittle my confidence. This may sound prideful, but it's nothing that I've got to prove to myself or anyone else. Rather, these little triumphs and daily victories build the courage to embrace the tougher situations in life. So, don't back down. Challenge yourself. Accept imperfections. Try those things you're terrified of. Explore the unimaginable. Live, fully.

And, remember, at the end of the day, you're still probably not as embarrassing as me.

My apologies...

I've been slacking in my blog duties. I'm going to blame it on the crazy amounts of homework and midterms that are being pressed upon us as Spring Break approaches. But, really, I've just been having way too much fun in the past few weeks. I promise an update will be coming soon. :)

For now, something I've been encouraged by lately:
"Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face...and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace."

Peace, friends.

Because You Are Loved

I made her; she is different. She is unique. With love I formed her in her mother's womb. I fashioned her with great joy. I remember, with great pleasure, the day I created her. I love her smile. I love her ways. I love to hear her laugh. And the silly things she says and does. She bring me great pleasure.
This is how I made her.

I made her pretty and not beautiful, because I knew her heart and knew she would be vain. I wanted her to search her heart and learn that it would be me in her that would make her beautiful and it would be me in her that would draw friends to her.
I made her in such a way that she would need me. I made her a little more lonesome than she would like to be.

Only because I need for her to learn to depend on me. I know her heart; I know if I had not made her like this she would go her own chosen way and forget me, her Creator.

I have given her many good and happy things because I love her. Because I love her, I have broken her heart and seen the tears she has cried alone. I have cried with her, with a broken heart too. Many times she has stumbled and fallen alone, only because she would not hold my hand. So many lessons she's learned the hard way because she would not listen to my voice.

So many times I have sat back and sadly watched her go her own way alone only to watch her return to My arms, sad and broken. And now she is mine again. I made her, and then I bought her. Because I love her.

I have to reshape and re-mold her to renew her to what I have planned for her to be. It has not been easy for her or for me.

I want her to be conformed to My image, this high goal I have set for her, because I love her.

Everything's Changed

What am I doing here
If you're not with me?
What have I got to live for, if it's just my own dream
Take it back to the beginning, back to the start
When gravity's pulling, you're still holding my heart
You come crashing down
Crashing down

These four walls are closing in on me
The talk is louder than I'll sing
I want to be there, want to be where you are
But you know it all, every look and smile that aren't meant to break
I'm over the bridge and under the rain

My Soul Longs for You

My soul longs for You
My soul longs for you
Nothing else will do
Nothing else will do

I believe You will come like the rain.
There may be pain in the night but joy comes in the morning...

All the (Nease 5N) Single Ladies

That whiteboard in the middle of our hall that's supposed to be scribbled with important information about upcoming events, birthdays, and news has been recently altered into a most pressing "question of the week" outlet.

The week before that Holiday To Not Be Named by the Companionless, some Sobered Sally writes: What's the best way to get over a guy?

"Watch P.S. I Love You with girlfriends and have a good cry."
"There's only one guy out there for you, so be glad you're not investing in the wrong one anymore."
"Ignore his existence."
"John Tucker must DIE!! Just sayin."
"Go surfing."
"Everything happens for a reason!"
"Tell everyone you know he's gay."
"Threaten to blackmail him."
"I wish I knew..."
"Get with a girl."
"Eat an unlimited supply of chocolate."
"Find value in your identity with God, not your 'marital' status. Be strong, grieve, and have fellowship with your girlfriends."
"Find another hottie!"
"Go to WalMart."
"If you're sad because you think the last guy was great, just think about the amazing guy that God is planning for you."
"Go out with the best guys ever...Ben and Jerry!"
"Delete him on Facebook."
"Get with another one...named Jesus."

So there ya go, Sally...there ya go.
